Italy Paid Time Off (Ferie) Guide
Understand your paid leave entitlements in Italy. Learn about the 4-week minimum, collective agreements, and how Italian vacation law works.
Annual Leave in Italy
Italian workers are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks (20 working days) of paid annual leave. This is established in the Civil Code and enhanced by collective agreements (CCNL).
Collective Agreements
Most Italian workers are covered by national collective agreements (CCNL) that often provide more than the minimum 4 weeks, plus additional time off categories.
Permessi (Permitted Absences)
In addition to ferie (vacation), Italian workers often receive "permessi" - additional paid hours for personal matters, often 32-72 hours per year.
Taking Leave
At least 2 consecutive weeks must be taken within the year of accrual. The remaining 2 weeks can be taken within 18 months.
