UK Annual Leave Entitlement
In the United Kingdom, almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave per year (28 days for someone working 5 days a week). This statutory entitlement includes bank holidays, which employers can count as part of your annual leave allowance.
Who is Entitled?
The right to paid holiday applies to almost all workers in the UK, including agency workers, workers with irregular hours, and those on zero-hours contracts. Part-time workers receive a pro-rated amount based on their hours.
Bank Holidays
The UK has 8 permanent bank holidays in England and Wales (Scotland has 9, Northern Ireland has 10). Employers can choose whether to include bank holidays as part of your statutory entitlement or offer them in addition to it.
Carrying Over Leave
UK law allows workers to carry over up to 1.6 weeks of unused leave to the next leave year if agreed with their employer. Additional carryover may be allowed if you were unable to take leave due to sickness or family leave.
