PTO for Part-Time Workers - Your Complete Guide
Understand PTO entitlements for part-time workers, including pro-rata calculations, eligibility requirements, and state laws that protect part-time employees.
Do Part-Time Workers Get PTO?
It depends on the employer and jurisdiction. Many employers provide pro-rated PTO to part-time workers. Some states with mandatory sick leave include part-time workers. Check your company policy and state laws.
Pro-Rata Calculation
Part-time PTO is usually proportional to hours worked. If full-time (40 hours) gets 80 hours PTO, part-time (20 hours) typically gets 40 hours. Formula: (Your hours ÷ Full-time hours) × Full-time PTO.
Eligibility Thresholds
Some employers require a minimum number of hours to qualify for PTO benefits. Common thresholds: 20+ hours/week, 1,000 hours/year, or "benefits-eligible" status. Ask HR about your eligibility.
State Sick Leave Requirements
Several states mandate paid sick leave for part-time workers: California (all employers), Washington, Oregon, and others. These laws often cover workers with any amount of hours.
