About Split Shifts
Split shifts occur when employees work two or more separate shifts in one day with a break in between. This is common in industries like hospitality, retail, and healthcare. While most states don't require split shift premiums, California mandates a premium of 1 hour of minimum wage unless the employee's total daily earnings exceed a certain threshold.
California Premium
1 hour of minimum wage unless total earnings exceed minimum wage for all hours plus premium.
Most States
No mandatory split shift premiums. Employers may offer them voluntarily.
New York
Spread-of-hours pay (1 hour minimum wage) when workday exceeds 10 hours.
