California Split Shift Premium
California is the only state that currently mandates split shift premiums. The premium is 1 hour of minimum wage, and it applies unless the employee's total daily earnings exceed minimum wage for all hours worked plus the premium hour. This protects workers from being undercompensated when working split shifts.
Other States
Most other states do not have specific split shift premium requirements. However, employees are still entitled to minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime pay if applicable. Some employers may voluntarily offer split shift premiums as a benefit, but it's not legally required.
